Your Personal “Girl Friday”

General Music Tips | Mental Tips

You hear this word a lot today; “Outsourcing”. Everyone is doing it, from tiny start ups to major corporations. Even individuals are turning to outsourcing. Think about it.  Do most people change their own oil any more? How many people do you know who still mow their own lawns? But outsourcing has gone beyond manual labor tasks. More and more people are outsourcing all kinds of things from gift buying to online dating. These days, you can out source just about anything!

Of course if you want to “outsource your life” as the book says you are going to have to pay. For instance, it will cost you around $800 a month, to have a virtual assistant through taskseveryday.com.

However, there is an entirely different type of outsourcing, that won’t cost you a dime.

What I am about to tell you may sound odd or even crazy to many of you but stay with me and I believe that you will see the truth of it.

If you know anything at all about me you know that I am a results driven person. In other words, if it works I do it!  I’m not too concerned with the why’s and how’s as long as I get the result that I want.  Recently, I have discovered  that I have  access to more help that I had ever imagined possible. You may have heard the expression “turn it over to your “higher power.” That is exactly what I have started doing, with some surprising results.

But let’s back up for a minute. We all have had strange coincidences on our life; times when things seem to mysteriously just work out. Let me site an example from Jean Slatter’s book Hiring the Heavens.  A woman looses the pearl from her ring while gardening and then a few hours later finds her dog playing with something which turns out to be the missing pearl.

The skeptic in me jumps up and says, “That’s why it’s called a COINCIDENCE!” But, let’s just pretend for a minute that there is some higher power at work here.  It doesn’t hurt to pretend right? After all you played all kinds of pretend games as a kid. Even some adults play role playing games, and do war reenactments.  No harm. No foul. Right?  While we are at it let’s pretend that this “higher power” is not judging us, or telling us what to do, or trying to run our lives in any way. In fact since this is our fantasy, let’s say that this power is at our complete disposal; at our command in fact. We wield this power and can cause it to do what we want at will.  But it is more than a magic wand or replicator like they have on Star Trek. This is an intelligent force. This higher power understands us and knows what we actually mean when we ask for something. It doesn’t need complicated programming like a computerized device like a replicator, and it always has our best interest in mind.  We can think of this higher power is a sort all powerful, all knowing “Girl Friday.”

So now that you have this all power Girl Friday at your disposal, what would you have her do? Help you design your website? Mix and master your CD? Find a sound man for your next show? Create the perfect promotional campaign for your latest release?

Let’s just assume that our Girl Friday can handle any task that you throw at her with total and complete ease. Our Girl Friday is so good in fact, she actually knows when something that we are asking for isn’t really in our best interest and she is able find a better alternative.  Now who wouldn’t want to have some one like that at on their team?

Kids, I’m hear to tell you that you actually do have this assistance. Your higher power or “Our Girl Friday” is ready and waiting to help out whenever you need her.

I can hear you saying, “Wait a minute. Are you telling me that I am supposed to turn over my life to some figment of my imagination?”

Yes I am! And No I’m not… Let me explain.

It doesn’t matter if your higher power is some product of your own imagination or consciousness or if it is angels, spirit guides, extra-dimensional beings, or aliens.  In fact it can be anything that you want it to be. If you are a religious person, your higher power may take the form of Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha or Krishna. If you consider your self “spiritual but not religious” you may choose to envision angels or spirit guides that help you. If you are a hard core atheist you may think of your higher power as accessing the quantum field, the collective consciousness, your higher self, or engaging the frontal lobe. It doesn’t really matter.  Remember what I said at the beginning of this discussion. We only care about one thing…results!  Without going into a bunch of psychological mumbo jumbo, it is a proven fact that people tend to create more, do more, accomplish more when they have a sense that they are being helped by something outside of and greater than themselves. There is a lot of debate about where this help comes from, but that is a discussion for another article. The point is; it works. So we will use it!

So how do we go about getting Girl Friday working for us? Let’s break this down into a few easy steps.

  1. Have a      desire. Want something. It can be small, or it can be gi-normous. It      doesn’t matter no job is too big or too small for Our Girl Friday!

  1. Ask…      “ye have not because ye ask not”. Open your mouth and VERBALLY ask. Don’t      mumble your request. Don’t ask timidly at all.  Ask with authority. Our Girl Friday is      at your disposal. She just needs to know what you want her to do. Make      your request firmly.

  1. Give      thanks. Be grateful. When you ask one of your employees or a co-worker to      do something you always say, “Thanks.” Right? This works for Girl Friday      too!

  1. Let it      go! It is done. Move on. You don’t have to worry about it. When it enters      your mind, remind yourself that Our Girl Friday is on it. She knows      EXACTLY what do. There is no need to worry. No need to keep asking or      reminding her. Remind yourself that it is done.

It is very important that you have a light hearted attitude through out this entire process. Have fun with this. Giggle. Laugh. Keep it light and enjoy the process. No begging or pleading. No desperate appeals. Ask with joy and gratitude. Have faith that it is in the works. Also, be patient. Our Girl Friday is on it!

Success Tip #37: Head Games

Mental Tips | Physical Tips

Head Games… not just a hit song by Foreigner. the lyric, “If you want to win you’ve got to learn how to play head games” refers to a romantic relationship, and may or may not be true. I know the idea of playing “head games” is normally thought of as a bad thing. In the case of the Foreigner song it’s the idea of stringing your lover along while you’re thinking about something better on the next horizon. But there are more innocent games, and helpful games too. We are always playing little head games or mind games with ourselves. Like when when we say that we are only going to have one cookie, but we know that one cookie usually turns into a nice round number like 3. Oh hell, might as well finish the box now. This way I won’t eat any tomorrow! Sound familiar? How about when it’s tax time and we convince ourselves that it would be much easier to file everything at the last minute. It’s a little game we play with ourselves. We justify, and rationalize to avoid discomfort or to game momentary pleasure. We all do it…and we do it a lot. Usually anything that you are procrastinating is a case of rationalizing that later would be better than sooner. We tell ourselves stories about how we don’t have time or it will be too difficult right now, or we need to wait until we have more energy, and there isn’t a Star Trek marathon on syfy channel. I’m not here to beat you up or tell you that you are full of shit and you better get your act together. Not at all.

Focus on your strengths

As you may or may not know I am big proponent of capitalizing on strengths as opposed to trying to over come weaknesses. What if we could turn these little games around a bit so that they would work for us as opposed to against us? As I said, we are all given to this tendency to tell stories when trying to avoid some thing that we think is going to be difficult. The key word is “think” it’s all in your head. The pain, the discomfort, is just a perception. After all what would happen if you did something totally crazy and did your taxes early this year? What if you said to yourself…”I know I really don’t have the time to do this but, I’m going to spend few minutes on this tax thing tonight. A few minutes won’t hurt too much.” What do you think would happen? A few minutes, as in fifteen minutes is totally doable. Even the biggest tax wimp would have to admit that they could spend 15 minutes organizing receipts with no ill effects. Now, what is the reality here? The reality here is that if do something for 15 minutes you are way more likely to continue and get a lot more done than you expected. This is the same as the cookie turning into 3 or 10. Before you know it you’ve eaten the entire box and your taxes are done.

How to use Head Games

I use these head games for all sorts of things including working out. If I am feeling really lazy. I may say something to myself like, “Okay…I’ll just go for like a 10 or 15 minute brisk walk.” I have NEVER gone for a 10 minute brisk walk.. It always turns into at least 30 minutes of running. I will also use head games when I feel more like watching Netflix than working in the studio. I say something like, “I’ll just go down to the studio for a few minutes. I’ll just listen want to listen to one mix.” and I almost always end up getting a lot done…a lot more than just tweaking a mix

A body in motion

If you’ve seen my Quick Tip videos you know that one of my quick tips is to simply move. It is a law of physics. A body at rest tends to remain at rest. A body in motion tends to remain in motion. That initial start though is the hardest part, and it is usually a lot easier to keep going once you’re up and running . This is physics in action. Keep this in mind when you are tempted to procrastinate. Then tell yourself, “I’ll just go for a short run.” “I’ll just practice for 15 minutes.” “I’ll just do a few sets at the gym today.” Not to contradict Tom Petty, but “the waiting” is not hardest part. Starting is the hardest part. Get your body in motion and you will see results, but sometime you have to learn how to play head games.

7 “SECRETS” TO KEEP YOU ROCKING OVER 40 AND BEYOND!

Mental Tips | Physical Tips

All musicians that are obsessed with their talent wish for nothing more than a successful music career even after the age of 40.  Here are 7 tips to help you along, not necessarily in any particular order.

  1. Appearance:  Face it.  People are judging you on your looks at least to some degree.  You can jump up and down and say it’s not fair, and while you might get a good work out it won’t change a damn thing.  Just accept it and make the necessary changes.  Start taking pride in your appearance.  When was the last time you changed you hairstyle?  Are you still wearing your flannel from the 90’s or parachute pants from the 80’s?  Take a look at some music magazines.  I’m not talking about your 30 year collection of Guitar Player magazines either.  Get some current issues and see what everyone is wearing. There are many looks out there to pick from; you don’t need to be super skinny or a fashion model to pull them off either.  You want to look your best on stage, have awestruck fans, you have to look good, and a beer belly just doesn’t cut it.  Clean does, fashionable does, good body shape does, and looking healthy does.  This brings me to my next point.
  2. Health I (Exercise):  Rough, tired looking skin and achy, unenthusiastic bodies can only mean you are lacking something.  Do you exercise?  If not then join the human race!  There is no way to keep the youthful vitality without some kind or workout regimen. You are in show business after all.  I can hear some of you say, “No, I am musician.”  Right you are in show business!  Very few actors do not exercise.  This is not just some nice hobby to have.  It is part of the business.  If you want to be in this business well into your 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s and beyond, you need to get an exercise program in place right now!
  3. Health II (Diet): The older you get the more this becomes a factor.  Do yourself a huge favour.  Don’t wait until your doctor tells you that you have clogged arteries or that you are borderline diabetic.  Start adding healthy foods to your diet right now.  This doesn’t mean that you can’t have anything tasty.  You can still eat what you like, but the word is moderation.  However, you must include good for you foods and supplements.
  4. Experience:  You can practice until you fingers bleed but at some point, you have to get out of the basement and on to the stage.  The first time you do it, you may find that you know a lot less than you think.  Congratulations!  You have just had a major learning experience.  You will get better with time.  It’s not that you are stupid or don’t know what you are doing.  The stage is a completely different animal.  It is more about mastering yourself than mastering your instrument.
  5. Dedication:  You may have asked yourself “Do I have what it takes?”  The only thing that you really need is a burning desire that is so strong that you will allow NOTHING to get in the way of your goals.  Once you have that, then you can answer this question with a resounding, “Yes!”
  6. Practice:  Set aside time on a regular basis, preferably everyday to work on playing, or singing things that you don’t know.  The temptation here is to play all the stuff that you are good at, because it makes you sound good.  Resist this ego trip.  Don’t be afraid to totally suck, just like you did when you first started.  This is the only way to grow successfully!
  7. Rest: Are you having trouble coming up with the last verse to that hit song that you’ve been pounding away at?  Maybe you need to just chill and come back to it tomorrow.  We are so busy trying to do more and more that we forget the value of true rest.  This is how the body and the mind rejuvenate; most of us are not getting enough rest to reset our systems.  This leads to frustration, burn out, early aging, and weight gain.  You will be a lot more productive with adequate sleep, than you ever will with pushing yourself self, day in and day out.  Get more sleep and get more done!

The Secret Weapon: 3 Tips to boost your Creativity

Mental Tips

If you’re like most musicians, you are always looking for new ideas, new licks, grooves, lyrics, or riffs.  We are creators!  We like to come up with new stuff to do with our music.  Unfortunately that is often a hard thing to do.  Do you ever feel stuck?  Do you feel like you’re just playing the same old licks?  Do you feel “blocked”?  Are you struggling to finish the lyrics to the second verse of that song you’ve been working of for the last two weeks? You might want to put the guitar down and hit the gym.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have been hearing that working out is the way that we strengthen our bodies, increase life span and stave off old age.  All true…you won’t get an argument from me on any of those points. But did you know that exercise has some additional perks that you  may not be aware of?  One of those is that exercise stimulates creativity…do you I have your attention now?

Recent studies involving school age children have shown that the capacity for learning is significantly increased when children move around, run, dance jump etc… while being taught.  In his book Spark the Revolution, John J. Ratey M.D. says that exercise is like taking a little Prozac or Ritalin.  The idea is to “clear the fog” so to speak.  Regular exercise increases endorphin production which leads to a greater sense of well being and an over all increased positive attitude.  This is the most productive state of mind for problem-solving…a.k.a being creative.  You cannot create in a fog. When you are blocked your state of mind is most definitely less than positive.  The most effective way to turn this around is to move your body!

Here are 3 tips for boosting your creativity using exercise.

  1. For best results you want to make sure that you get at least 30 minutes of rigorous exercise a day at least 5 days/week.  It can be anything from a brisk walk to hard core weight training or running but it should be enough to increase your heart rate into your target zone.
  1. Work out before sitting down to write music or lyrics or even before practicing. This will get those problem solving endorphins flowing.
  1. If you feel stuck or blocked stop working. Get up and move around. Put on some music and dance around your house or apartment. Better yet, go for a brisk walk or run out side.  Get your heart rate up for 20 minutes or so.  You may want to take a note pad or mini voice recorder with you.  Your “break-through” will more than likely come to you before you get back to your house.

There is no need to make this complicated. Movement stimulates the creative juices, no matter if that movement is choreographed “dance moves”, a brisk walk, or holding various yoga poses.  The most important thing to remember is to move your body. Stimulate the body and the mind is sure to follow!

No Mr. Spock, humans are not logical!

Mental Tips

If you think that you make descisions based on sound reasoning or logic you would be completely wrong! Human beings are emotion driven creatures. Most of our decisions are based primarily on emotions. We decide to do something or not to do something based either on how we feel about it or how we imagine our choice will make us feel. Don’t believe me? Why did you decide to become a musician? Would you agree that that decision was probably one of the bigger decisions that you made in you life? Did you weigh all the options, do a bunch of research and after careful examination of all the facts decided to learn to play guitar? You can kid yourself if you want but if you are honest with yourself you will have to admit that you wanted to play music because it made you feel good to play. In fact most of the major decisions that we make as human beings are made out of emotion. We get married because of emotion. We get divorced because of emotion. Our decision to pick a certain career is highly influenced by emotion. We want to have kids because of emotion. It’s all about the feeling!

A lot of people have talked about mastering their emotions and not being so “emotionally driven”. That may seem like a noble approach on the surface but it’s a loosing proposition. This stems from the idea that emotions are a weakness that we need to overcome and conquer. First of all e cannot escape our emotions, but even if we could it is always much better to concentrate on enhancing strengths than trying to overcome weaknesses. It takes a lot of effort to overcome anything and if it is something that is heavily ingrained you may only overcome for a short period of time before you have slipped backward to your old ways again.

But what if we need not over come or master our emotions at all? What if we could harness these powerful gifts and mold them and shape them to bring us great success in all our endeavours? This is totally possible and it is being done all the time. And you don’t just need the “good” emotions either… any emotion can be harnessed and focused to move you in the direction that you want to go. Fear and anger can be just as helpful as love and gratitude. Fear of poverty has driven many to great financial success. Anger over social injustices has cause people to abolish slavery. There are no “bad” emotions. Like Eric Clapton says, “It’s in the way that you use it.” The next time you feel over come with emotion take a minute and ask yourself, “How can I harness this very powerful feeling to move me closer to my greater goals and desires?” Harness your emotions and you can accomplish anything.

Positive Mental Health As It Relates To Physical Fitness and Music

Mental Tips

Are you one to spurn the mental attitude positive thinking stuff?  Also, have you noticed when your body hurts so does your mind and visa versa.  When you think negative thoughts, are stressed or upset with things in general, you get snappy, irritable, tired and your body hurts from the tension.  If you are a musician being in this frame of mind and soul does not help the creative side, and it becomes difficult to concentrate and play to the best of your ability.  Stiff arms and fingers don’t help a proficient guitar player at all.

Creative Visualization is a form of meditation and is a fancy name for “relax, then think all kinds of pleasurable thoughts and put them into a creative mode, imagine you are acting on those thoughts, and see it mentally.”  It also means bringing positive, mental health and attitudes into your life.  For anyone creative, conjuring up positive and pleasant thoughts can be easy when putting them into mental pictures and this type of meditation can be accomplished anywhere, but being in a quieter environment with others of the same mind, makes this exercise easier and more flourishing, the multiple minds creating maxi positive thoughts and emotions.  To create stimulating, motivational and positive thoughts disposes of the stress and you begin to relax.  If you are alone when you meditate try laying down, this would be a good time to make sure every part of your body is relaxed by starting with your feet and working your way up.  As you ‘see’ the relaxation taking place with each limb you imagine and relax, your mind can gradually dispel of all negative inspirations and turn them positive with his form of meditation.   This is creative visualization.  You can close your eyes and get immersed in a believable vision; you are up on stage in front of thousands of people all screaming for more of your great music.  Think harder, get rid of any other thoughts, suddenly you can feel the positive vibes that are emanating from the imaginary crowd in your mind.   Stand to the back of the crowd and see yourself, you can see yourself playing your ultimate best now you are relaxed you are enjoying this ‘mind movie’ starring you, and you are glad people love you and your music.   You can of course change that scene into a meadow full of daisies, or a rushing river, whatever you like and wherever you would like, and once you come back to reality you will find your mind has brightened and the outlook is much better, your body more relaxed and ready.

Yoga is not just about making supremely graceful moves and keeping your balance while doing so, it is about good physical and mental health, which in turn enhances creativity and inspiration.   To achieve this much of the time we should be conscientious about our diet, but in this busy world, that is a bucket list item.  You should make sure your body is in good enough condition to perform certain tasks, there are over 20 Yoga Poses for Stress alone, and for the guitar player there are over 20 poses for arm strength, and for hands and fingers there are more than 10 Yoga poses.   Don’t let their names scare you, you will be amazed at how easily you can fold into all kinds of ‘ohm’ positions.

It is important for all, not just musicians to have a positive outlook and attitude, in this world, that could be hard to accomplish, but with good mental health and positive attitude comes good physical health and strength, after 40 should be no problem.  If your schedule is too busy to spend extended time with creative visualization or Yoga, getting into the habit of five minute ‘boosters’ can work anywhere.   A five-minute booster is a ‘take a quickie break for the mind’ type of meditation.  Just stop everything, find something to concentrate on, such as staring at nothing or a spot on the wall, empty your mind, quickly.  Your five minutes goes fast, so don’t fill your mind with trivialities, empty it.  Drift away, stay wherever you went mentally for a couple of minutes, then back to what you were doing.  You might not feel it but your mind is clearer.  As you get more accustomed to doing this five-minute booster meditation exercise, you will definitely notice the difference in everything.  Your music or vocation will improve your mental attitude and outlook in general will give you more confidence.
